In the past the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could increase the credibility of the movement. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. Over time, this differential reproduction could lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took shape in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living things develop characteristics to increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution because they are not inherited by the next generation.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from high school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestral bird's parent.

In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

While some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. They call their view “theistic evolution.” This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this view, God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.

On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
